This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach in a multi-age classroom. I have 10 pre-k students and 10 kindergarten students. I need materials that I can send home with my children to reinforce the things that we are doing in the classroom. Most of the parents in our school district are struggling simply to make ends meet and therefore have little, if any, left over for materials that would be of academic value to their children. I was able to work in the homes with my incoming kindergarten students and their parents this summer. I found that the problem was not that my parents did not care about their children's academics. The problem was that they did not know how to help their children and did not have the materials needed. When I was able to place quality materials and activities in their hands, they helped their children in the learning process. I would like to have a set of materials that I can sent home to help my parents reinforce my classroom work with their children. I would like to purchase alphabet learning games and manipulatives which would help my children to build vocabularies and knowledge of letters and their sounds. Most of the children from our schools tend to score in the low average range. I want better for my children than just low-average. I want to give them every opportunity possible to become successful readers, writers, and test takers!
