I teach resource and full-time special education students at a Title 1 middle school. I believe that even students who face poverty can learn that recycling can make a difference by building respect, integrity, caring, and responsibility for making their world a better place.

My middle grade students are learning about different biomes and how these biomes are being endangered due to our lack of attention to sustain them. My middle grade students would like to start recycling within our school. However, we do not have the supplies to make this happen.

Our class would need the bins placed throughout the school and especially in the lunchroom. As the plan coordinator for this on-going project, my students will collect daily and store plastic containers that I will take to the recycling facility on Fridays. I truly believe that by seeing how much plastic containers they collect and incorporating this information into a lessons, the students will learn exactly how much waste can be recycled, and help sustain our planet. Most of all, my goal is that my students become life long learners about the true benefits of recycling.

By supporting our recycling project, my students will see the value in how much they are truly making a difference in their community.
