Hello! My name is Philip Clark (that's Mr. Clark to any 6th graders reading this!) and I work at the Granville T. Woods School of Science and Technology in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, with 92% of the students on free lunch. I am the proud teacher of the 6th grade Level 4 Class of 2016 (that's the year they'll all graduate from college). I teach ELA, Social Studies, and Math. My twenty-seven 6th graders this year have higher reading scores than either the 7th or 8th graders in my school, but I lack the resources to provide these ambitious, energetic learners with the books they need to fulfill their reading potential. We couldn't start reading workshop in my classroom until the third week of school because we didn't have any books in our library. Although I have sated their appetites a quick fix infusion of Horrible Harry and Junie B. Jones that we received on emergency order, that won't last them long – we flat out need more books in our library. Thorough review of the student surveys I administered clearly reveals that Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Roald Dahl are my scholars' favorite authors. The addition of these twenty books will empower my scholars as readers by giving them texts they want to read. These books will help our reading workshop become a highlight of the day, as they return to the wonderful worlds of Witches, Ramona the Brave, and Superfudge. Reading and writing is the most powerful tool I can give my students, and these books are integral to generating student interest and accelerating development. These classic stories will go a long way towards ensuring that everyone has something engaging and meaningful for them to read. Every scholar will be able to read them, providing over 700 hours of crucial reading time to my class. One of the goals for the Level 4 Class of 2016 is to read 2016 books this year, but to do that we must have high-interest leveled texts such as these. Please help the Class of 2016 get the books we need to succeed academically and achieve our ambitious reading goal! The cost of bringing these valuable resources to the Level 4 Class of 2016 is about $100.
