Help A First Year Teacher Instruct an Astronomy Course.

My students need a telescope.

Mr. C.
Grades 9-12

How can we study astronomy without a telescope? I teach physics and astronomy and will (next year) be part of the science club. My students are 11th and 12th graders. My high school serves special needs students that can not be supported by neighboring towns. They are included in my student body.

The teacher who has been instructing astronomy for the past 30+ years is retiring. And he's bringing his telescope with him!! I am a first year teacher and can not afford to buy my own. But I can't show the students the sun, the moon, the rings of Saturn, and local galaxies without a decent telescope. Without a telescope, students will be limited to pictures and will never really enjoy the amazement of seeing the solar system up close and personal.

All I need is one telescope to solve the problem. With special foil, we can observe the Sun during the day and I can show students sun spots, prominences, and flares. At night (with parental permission of course) we can meet where there is little light pollution and see faint objects, like Jupiter, Saturn, and even close galaxies. I can personally afford to buy a moon filter, so I can show my students our closest neighbor without the threat of harming their vision. Best of all, with proper care, this telescope can be used for many many years to come.

With your generous and kind donation, students will do more than simply read about astronomy and look at pictures in a book. They will see it as it was meant to be seen. In real time. This will ensure that their curiosity is piqued and will lead to richer class discussions later.
