Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I joined my classroom two months after the start of the school year. When we began 75% of my students were receiving either a D or an F and very few thought that learning science was an achievable goal. When trying to figure out why my students were so insistent that they could not learn science and that it was not reasonable to expect them to, I began to hear a common theme: while reading our science books, many of my 7th grade science students have commented that the kids in the book don't look like they do. They don't participate in the same activities or have the same struggles. I believe that a lack of positive role models that my students can relate to in the science field is a major reason for their discouragement. Rather than look at the same unfamiliar faces while learning, I want to cover my room with pictures of my students performing experiments and being actively engaged with the science material. Everyday when they come into the classroom, I want them to be surrounded with images of themselves succeeding and engaging in the material. A digital camera will not only allow our classroom to become a place where the students can see themselves achieving but also a means to witness and record our science observations about the experiments we will be doing in class.
