This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Excellence without excuses is what we do, our education--our responsibility is what we believe, no matter our situation. We may be Title-I and my middle graders may have to deal with adult situations at home but that is their motto and they hold each other and themselves accountable to it. Mathematics these days in Georgia are pretty tough especially the abstract parts of algebra but these children believe that Math and English is the key to them becoming better citizens and having better lives no matter where they come from.
Unfortunately, most of my children are from a low income, high-need community, that is technologically deficient. They face tremendous difficulties everyday and most have GAPS in their education, where they lack prerequisite knowledge needed to master new grade level concepts. However these children are remarkable in determination and perseverance in that they come to before school and after school tutoring even missing some sport practices to fill their GAPS. They truly are outstanding aren't they!Unfortunately, most of my children are from a low income, high-need community, that is technologically deficient. Sadly, our school district left only one copier in our school and only a few people like administrators and secretaries can make our copies and teachers are rationed 500 sheets of paper a month.
What a great opportunity to show my children that we too (a school) can become green. Schools use a lot of paper every year and although most of the paper we use is and can be recycled what if we cut our use down as well. The ELMO can do this as well as help us clear our GAPS in Math and English. The ELMO will give me the power to use one sheet or open page in book and project it for the whole class without making a copy or transparency and even do it in color! We will be able to work out problems together and everyone can see no matter where they sit. They can place their own work and have it projected, if they like, right then without any time delay to make copies or transparencies. Then there is the 3D ability of the ELMO that neither a overhead or copier can do which is exceptional for teaching geometry.
