Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a self-contained, 1st Grade dual language classroom at Rachel Carson Elementary School in Chicago. The number of students I serve ranges from 26-30. My school is 90% minority and predominantly Hispanic. For about 90% of my students, English is a second language and spanish is the only language spoken at home. It would be very beneficial for my students to have access to books on CD so that they could have the opportunity to develop their oral English skills and reading fluency. A listening center with accompanying multiple copies of books on CDs would do much good in my classroom. Listening to stories read aloud by a good reader gives the students a model of fluency. Students get the opportinuity to listen to English being read at an appropriate pace and proper pronunciation. I love teaching and want the most success for all of my students but I often do not have the personal funds or resources to purchase these items on my own that would benefit my students. Another plus in using these books in my classroom is that parents could check them out and practice or learn English themselves. The use of the listening center and books on CD will directly benefit the students and set them on the road to success as they leave my classroom fluent readers. Thank you for your consideration.
