This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
90% of the students in my school live in poverty and have limited educational opportunities. I teach elementary music (1st-3rd grade) in two elementary schools in the district. The district these students go to school in is desperately in need of money. The district was featured in a recent law suit and movie called the "Corridor of Shame" which focused on the unequal educational opportunities for students in rural South Carolina schools.
The school gives each special area teacher a small allotment of money each year. The money is nowhere close to what I need to buy quality music instruments.
I need a collection of 7 African drums to use in the classroom for a variety of educational experiences. Elementary students need to learn and experience rhythm at this young age and drums will help them do this. I would like the students to participate in a drum circle. Being actively engaged in drum circles will promote music learning as well as much needed social skills.
Without some outside financial help, it will take years to purchase enough drums for every student.
