Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in a Title 1 school in Washington Heights, NYC. Recently I decided to conduct an informal survey of my teacher friends to find out what they think the most important element of their literacy curriculum is. I expected them to name time-tested strategies such as shared reading, conferring with individuals or small group instruction. Overwhelmingly, the most experienced among them said that a wide range of interesting reading material is the number one variable that got their kids excited about reading. "You can't teach a bored kid how to read!" asserted one of my mentors.
However, in early grades there seems to be a mysterious dearth of truly engaging easy-to-read text. Publishers seem to feel that good reading material for young readers means easily decodable text, and they stuff their repetitive, bland readers full of it, often at the cost of engaging content.
That's where my request for Time for Kids comes in. This weekly magazine offers children interesting, diverse reading material that is both accessible AND engaging. I have a few laminated copies in my nonfiction center that were given to me by another teacher, and they disappear faster than pencils and graham crackers in my room. In addition, they contain many of the nonfiction elements that children are expected to become familiar with by the end of elementary school. They feature tables of content, captions, headings, how-to instructions and glossaries. Enlarged copies are available for shared reading with the whole class.
This year I'd like to give all of my kids the chance to bring home their own copy of Time for Kids each week. Unfortunately, the $4.00 subscription is beyond the reach of many of my families. I am requesting a class set of magazines, 30 subscriptions, totaling $128. With this consistent, engaging resource at their fingertips, I know I'll have a classroom full of excited readers (and researchers) by the end of the year.
