Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I will be a first grade teacher in a Title 1 school in Washington Heights, NYC. I "looped" with my kindergarteners and am looking forward to a great year with them in first grade. One of the benefits of looping is that since the teacher spends two full years with a class, she gets to know the kids really well. And if there's one thing my class agrees on, it's that we love hermit crabs! A student of mine brought her own crab in for a week last year and her classmates became so enthralled that crabs became a recurring theme for the rest of the year. We studied them in nonfiction centers and made murals of the beach with scores of imagined crabs. A group of them even wrote birthday cards for their classmate's pet when she announced the little crustacean was about to turn one. This year our theme is People At Work and I would love to tie pet-care into the unit. I also just want to see the looks on their faces when they meet their very own crab! I am requesting a "Hermit Crab Kit" to get us started raising our very own hermit crab.
