Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I attended a fabulous staff development workshop this summer on implementing Readers' Workshop in my first grade classroom. It's a wonderful research based model of teaching out of teachers' college at Columbia University. The program calls for students to have 60 minutes of daily reading practice on their own, reading practice with partners, and reading practice with teacher coaching. I attended the workshop out of a desire to strengthen my teaching of reading skills, knowing that the writers' workshop program also out of Columbia University has strengthened my teaching and my students' levels of literacy. The readers' workshop follows the same model and incorporates the valuable coaching skills that I've been implementing for the past eight years as a teacher.
In order to implement readers' workshop in my classroom, I need LOTS of books available at a variety of skill levels in order to meet all of my first graders' needs. My class is roughly 50% native English speaking, and 50% English Language Learners. The readers' workshop program allows me to give a lot of small group and individual time to all students, especially the struggling ones. Our school is rural, and receives considerably less funding than other schools in our county, making it impossible to obtain enough books for my classroom without the help of donations and grants.
I've selected Rigby books because they are leveled and designed for the kind of coaching and teaching of reading outlined in the readers' workshop. Rigby books are in use in classrooms across the country and are also popular with reading specialist teachers. They are offered in sets with instructional guides for teachers. I've used them and found them to be effective in building vocabulary and reading skills.
The readers' workshop would provide my students for years and years with a fun, independent, and rich literacy experience.
