Hi, I am a second grade teacher, at a Chicago Public School in the North Lawndale Community, who would like very much for each of my students to have simple, basic calculators to assist in solving math problems. Last year, my students had to share calculators and I do not feel that 15 calculators between students is sufficient enough for my class to gain the most out of their mathematical experience. Because my students attend a school where 99% qualify for free lunch, I do not wish to create an added expense to the school supply list. In our classroom, the calculator will not be used to replace children's learning of the basic facts or other ways of doing computation. Instead, it would be used as a tool for doing mathematics- much like pencil and paper, and counters. It would allow for my children to investigate ideas and relationships, to solve more complex problems, and to provide opportunities for exploring math on their own. I'm sure I can speak on my students behalf when I say we would greatly appreciate helping us to add 10 more calculators to our 15. And thank you for all attempts to further student education.
