Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade bilingual students in a low socioeconomic area in Texas. Many of these students don't have many experiences outside of the classroom. My students come from single parent homes, are latch key kids, or have other home problems.

Our students have a started a project in which students earn play money either through attendance, good grades, behavior, or any other extraordinary attribute they may show. I started the process, but because of lack of paper my hands are tied to extend on opening a bank in my classroom.

I need colored paper, binders, binder clips, pencils, two stamp pads, two date stamps, and dividers for my bank. My students will be able to deposit and withdraw monies from their account. My students have been saving their monies and purchase items every six weeks from my store. They are understanding the value of money and the concept of exchanging monies. They are using math concepts for this ongoing activity in the classroom. They have been excited about the whole money issue. They have their own personal wallets in which they keep it. I want them to experience how the real world works when it comes to banks and money. Students will have to record and calculate their classmates' bank account ledgers.

Students who are knowledgeable about money and the real world will impact society in the future. Giving these students the opportunity to run their own bank in the class will be very beneficial. I know that hands-on learning is the most effective way to teach students about any concept. What better way then through this project, which will carry through with them for the rest of their lives.
