Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in the Compton School District. My students live in Compton where forty percent of the African American children are in foster care and the homicide rate is higher than any other city in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, leaving many of my students the witness or victim of crime.
Children coming from such an unstable environment can be hostile, defensive, angry and aggressive. Some children at my school are often displacing their emotions and aggressions and taking them out on other children, making our school an unsafe environment where bullying is prevalent.
According to research regarding brain-based learning, optimal learning occurs in a safe and challenging environment. Although I cannot stop the bullying on our campus, I can engage and lead my students in a comprehensive unit that addresses these issues and teaches them how to resolve and better direct their anger, reducing the instances in which bullying occurs.
This unit consists of introducing six pillars of characteristics: trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, caring, citizenship, and fairness. Within these pillars we will further investigate and discuss eleven major sub-areas: bullying, prejudice, conflict resolution, anger management, cooperation, teasing, lying, stealing, tattling, fighting, and cheating.
My focus is developing character education because it teaches children about basic human values that allows them to become morally responsible, self-disciplined citizens by solving problems, making decisions and resolving conflicts. Through role playing and discussions, students can see that their decisions affect other people and things.
Activities will include but is not limited to the following:
Discussions, stories and videos,
Vocabulary, journals, role-play, and scriptwriting, Singing, acting and cooperative groups, Collage, surveys and graphing.
This unit will culminate with a play written by the children addressing the issues that were learned and discussed throughout this unit.
This type of learning is encouraged by such philosophers and educational psychologists as Montessori, Dewey, Tyler, Vygotsky, Kohlberg and many others.
