Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Greetings! I am a second year teacher at Herzl Elementary in Chicago's North Lawndale Community. Our population consists of 99% of students who receive free lunch. Last year, I taught first grade and like many first year teachers, I came with the thought that my students would learn so much from me. However, I quickly discovered that true, meaningful knowledge comes from within the student. My students' spirit and eagerness to learn inspired me to move with them to second grade in the following school year of 2005. Since the very first days of school, I tried to instill in my students a sense of responsibility for their own learning. My ultimate goal was to help parents produce independent life long learners. As a start, I included the activity of alphabetizing and organizing lessons in primary dictionary skills for my class. As I started to see immediate growth in the ability to find words in a dictionary, I included it as a part of vocabulary lessons. My students love the challenge of looking up words in a dictionary. However, I was never able to allow them to look up the meaning of a word. The dictionaries within my classroom are for intermediate users and the meanings given within them are long and complex. This definitely did not leave room for independent learning. The first and second grade students that enter my classroom and I would greatly appreciate the benefit of having grade-level appropriate dictionaries as this would definitely inspire the students in my class to become independent learners.
