Imagine: You walk into the den, sit down by the fireplace in your favorite comfy chair, pick up a book from the end table, and begin to read. The atmosphere of the room combined with the words on the page fill your mind with images, floating and connecting into a seamless mental narrative. You are wondrously engaged in the reading experience. As an English teacher in the Bronx, this is scenario I am trying to approximate in my ninth grade classroom. My students are 'high-needs' learners and often 'below-level' readers, who are not excited about reading and the many joys it can bring. Thus, I am trying to encourage them to be comfortable with reading and eager to sit down to explore different texts. What better way to stimulate interest in reading than to give my students a pleasant place in which to read? I would like to create a 'reading nook' that would include at least ONE EASY CHAIR and ONE SIDE TABLE or small coffee table. This area would be a relaxed, inviting place for the students to visit when they have a good book in mind, or when they'd like to be in as comfortable an area as possible while they attempt to engage with a difficult text. This furniture would also provide a wonderful area in which to conduct individualized student-teacher reading conferences (allowing the student to sit in the comfy chair while reading, of course)! I would be tremendously appreciative upon receiving such a gift for my students' classroom. Thank you very much for your consideration. Lauren Jacobs
