As a World Geography teacher at Boiling Springs High 9th Grade Campus, one of the questions that I am most frequently asked by my students is, "Why do we have to study about people of the past? They are not around anymore, so why should we care about them?" At first, I struggled with how I should answer that question. After all, I asked the same question when I was in school! After much thought and preparation, I have designed an archaeological research project for my students to participate in that will help them understand the relevance of past societies, and how those societies impact the way we live today.
Students will work in teams with my imaginary college (Mr. Hardee's College of History) to determine if the past is relevant to the future. Teams of five will study the religion, architecture, politics, economics and culture of the Incas, Aztecs or Mayans. The teams will create a PowerPoint presentation, a brochure, and a webpage evaluating the conclusions they determine from their studies. They will then be required to make a presentation to the Dean of the College (which is me!)
Materials that students will need include a computer with Internet access, a printer, and a LCD projection system. The LCD projection system is the material of most need. Our school only has 1 LCD projector, and that must be shared among 35 faculty members. Presenting this project will take a minimum of three 1-hour class periods, and I simply cannot tie up our 1 LCD projector for that long! Approximately 115 students will have the opportunity to participate in this project.
I believe that many students "hate" history because they cannot see its relevance to the world they live in today. By completing this project, students will begin to understand that issues such as politics, religion, economics, and culture have been debated and dissected for years. The goal of my project is to show students that the past does impact the present, and the issues we face today have been troubling world citizens for years.
