As a Kindergarten teacher I feel it is my responsibility to do my part by incorporating movement and motion in the classroom every day of the year. Offering my 26 students fun and rewarding ways to learn can easily be incorporated with the right supplies. I have da’ noise (music) but your help is needed to provide da’ funk (fun supplies)!

According to the American Medical Association, Twenty percent of our nation’s children are overweight causing concern for major health problems down the road. Physicians and researchers are concerned that childhood obesity can lead to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Three years ago the South Carolina legislature pledged $23 million for an additional 250 physical education teachers across the state boosting the time students are offered physical activity. Starting in 2008, elementary students must have 90 minutes of physical education and 60 minutes of physical activity weekly.

I have da’ noise (music) but your help is needed to provide da’ funk (fun supplies)! These activities are planned to be interactive, support the curriculum, address South Carolina Standards, promote social skills, and provide pure fun while learning the required content! Students will be given alphabet mats, number mats, ribbons, scarves, and number bean bags to introduce specific content areas as well as use them for demonstration/assessments of content knowledge.

Several times a day as we are learning letters, numbers, shapes, and colors, we can incorporate movement into the classroom as a fun means of learning content. These materials will provide opportunities for students to learn, exercise, and have fun at the same time. Students can hop, jump, and bounce from letter to letter on the alphabet mats or number mats. They will love drawing letters in the air and swinging to the beat with scarves and ribbons. I also have a great CD called Bean Bag Rock and Roll, I just need the bean bags. Please help us bring in da' funk so we can have a great time learning through music and movement!
