I would like for 6th grade art students to create a quilt with their individual portraits on their own square. Each student will be given a muslin cloth square on which their picture will be transferred. Quilts will then be displayed in the hallways. They first trace their family tree, interview family members and gain a better understanding of their family and name origins. This will be a cross curriculum project since it will incorporate 6th grade world history and consumer science sewing skills. They will also design their own coat of arms and create a family tree. Students will also be asked about the characteristics of a name: History, significance,feelings about their name and even the use of nicknames. All too often, students have no idea about their heritage or know very little information concerning grandparents, etc. For those students who are foster childeren or being raised by a guardian, they would do their guardian's family tree.
