Many students in my classes are unaware of the cruelty and mistreatment that millions of Jewish men, women and children endured during WWII. Set in Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943, the 1990 Newbery winner, Number the Stars, tells of a 10-year-old girl who risks her life and her family's life to save her best friend who is Jewish. There are many feelings and emotions in this book including: fear, bravery, love, anger, intelligence, empty-mindedness, and hatred. It is a very good book for young readers because it teaches all about the war experience and the many thoughts of the war. A young girl must hide her best friend and help smuggle her out of the country because she is Jewish. I always review and reflect on the suppression of African Americans in our history with my students during Black History month, and I strongly feel the Jewish annihilation and its injustice is just as important to teach. I want my 7th graders to know their past so that they never repeat our world's mistakes. I feel teaching through novels with characters that have emotions and words and thoughts is a better way to relate to my students that just stating facts. Plus, the "reading" benefit is also there. My school has a very high minority percentage, and I feel could relate greatly to this novel. Having a class set of 30 novels would be extremely wonderful for them. Students learn so much better when they enjoy what they are reading!
