Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in an English Language Development classroom. All of my students are native Spanish speakers, and about 20% of them are monolingual. They come from a low income, migrant area. Many of them are recent immigrants to the United States.

My students are in need of individual seat sacks to help them learn important organization and self-management skills. Our school was built on a tight budget and our classrooms lack storage and space. The lack of storage and space makes our classroom feel cluttered and disorganized, making it difficult for students to develop a sense of school pride. I have 5 or 6 students sitting at each table. They share a limited number of supplies such as crayons and pencils in a box at the center of each table. All of our workbooks, journals, and other materials must be stored in plastic tubs on the floor because there is no space at the tables. When students need to use one of these items, they must bring the plastic tub to the table and pass out materials. The time it takes to haul the plastic tubs back and forth and pass out materials is valuable educational time that is being wasted. My students also have no personal space in the classroom to learn about valuable organization skills. Often their materials get torn up when being thrown in and out of the plastic bins by other students. I want them to learn how to organize their own supplies, which will be a valuable skill in all grades.

The seat sacks would provide an easy solution to one of the major sources of clutter in our classroom. Students would have easy access to their own materials and books. The time that is currently wasted retrieving materials and books would be turned into more learning time.

Your generous donation will turn our classroom into a more organized and stress free environment. It will help students develop a sense of pride and responsibility for their materials. It will also ensure more time spent learning and less time spent searching for materials and books.
