After reading a fabulous book on teaching reading strategies to young children, I am completely convinced that my 24 kindergarteners will simply blossom from this reader's workshop approach to reading instruction. In order to make this successful, I need high-quality, engaging books that will capture their imagination and creativity allowing them to try these reading strategies, like inferring, questioning and synthesizing. I teach in a school that serves an African-American community, mostly all of whom are residents in the Dearborn Homes, part of the Chicago Housing Authority, and 98% of them are on public assistance.
What we have found at our school is that the children we serve struggle with reading comprehension. This is evident in their standardized test scores. Beginning this strategy instruction early in kindergarten will ultimately boost their performance later on these standardized tests in third grade. With these books, I know I can teach these children how to choose a book and dig deep into the text to derive the meaning from within. Specifically, I need more non-fiction books about topics that interest my boys and girls like bugs, animals, sports, vehicles, buildings and careers. With these non-fiction books they will learn strategies like questioning, inferring, and determining importance. I also need books with predictable text, like those containing rhyme, song, and repetition. These easily-mastered books will help the children to feel successful with books early in September, so they can move on to more difficult texts like non-fiction. Ultimately, I would like to add 4 or 5 books per child, to our classroom library.
I can't wait to send pictures of my kindergarteners drawing their mental images from a story and making charts synthesizing their learning from a non-fiction text. Thank you in advance!
