Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I cannot say how often I have tried to give my students firsthand science experiences, only to run into one obstacle after another. I used to wonder, can I really justify spending four class periods on the school playground waiting to observe the predator/prey relationship? Is it possible, within the school budget, to take my class to the crater of a volcano?
Teachers have long used the media--and particularly film--to accomplish various instructional objectives such as building background for particular topics or motivating student reaction and analysis. The appeal of visual media continues to make film, video, and television educational tools with high potential impact; and they are now considerably more accessible and less cumbersome to use.
Many classrooms have changed dramatically with the advent of new technologies and equipment developed to make teaching and learning more diversified and interactive. Unfortunately, the school I work at in the Bronx, NY (C.S. 234x) is lagging far behind in the technology department. My school does have one television with a VCR on the second floor, however I am a first grade classroom teacher on the first floor and there is no elevator. Teachers may sign up to use the television/vcr, but students must go to the second floor and there is rarely an available classroom.
The combined use of texts, audio, and video increases the student's chance of grasping the lesson. By using instructional videos strategically, many of these obstacles disappear.
I am requesting a television and video player for my classroom to use as an instructional tool. Video brings the outside world in and allows children to have these firsthand experiences right in their classrooms, where they can fully explore the ideas in an ongoing course of study. These are the type of experiences I would like to be available for the students in my classroom.
