Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year will be my second year teaching the fifth grade, at PS75 in the South Bronx, NY. This September, 32 young minds will enter my room and become my responsibility for a year of exploration and discovery. My students are mostly from low-income communities and many of them spend more time in our classroom than in their own homes, and I want to provide a space that is safe and comfortable for my students. My classroom currently has large holes in the floor where tiles used to be, but after years of wear and tear, all that remains is jagged wooden panelling under them. Last year my students and I tried our best to work around the holes by trying to cover them up with whatever we could find. This year, I would like to create a homey atmosphere in my classroom that is free of holes in our floor by covering the floor with a rug. We will use the carpeted space during whole class mini-lessons; we will be able to sit together and share our ideas during class discussions; and during independent reading time, I can see my students finding comfy places on the rug to curl up with a good book. Please help to make Class 5-506 not only a classroom for me and my students, but a home where we as a family will grow and learn together.
