Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching in an urban school district for four years now, and I've learned the sad fact that teenagers don't understand grammar, and this lack of understanding hinders their ability to write clearly. Teenagers who do not speak Standard English in their home have a particularly difficult time writing in Standard English. I have also discovered that direct grammar instruction drastically improves these students' syntax. (Note this article by Stanley Fish: http://www.todroberts.com/USF/nytimes_devoid-of-content.htm.) Sadly, again, I have found very few grammar materials targeted at teens. Therefore, I want to make my own materials with my students. I want to work with my students to make a series of 3-5 minute animated videos that teach teenagers about grammar. The videos will have three main characters who appear in each episode. The characters will embed the grammar concept in a simple and funny narrative that lasts between 2-3 minutes. Then, the characters will lead a sing-along in which the chorus directly teaches the concept. The animation will be simple and the dialogue and song will be self-consciously corny. The first video is in the works: the Verb. I need help from you to purchase the animation software we will need to complete our first video and to carry on making more grammar videos.
