I am entering my third year as a Social Studies Teacher at Paul Robeson H.S. in Brooklyn, New York. Literacy continues to be my passion. Last year's dictionaries and composition notebooks, used to implement literacy in the social studies classroom, was a huge success. I would like to continue the literacy push by implementing the use of novels, and historical fiction to teach history. It is important that students begin to look at other materials to learn and process history. The standard textbook should be only used as a point of reference. It is my goal to help improve students reading and writing skills by presenting other educational tools, such as novels, in the social studies classroom. History should not be a list of facts and dates. In addition, reading and writing should become apart of the history curriculum. To help achieve my desired goals, I am requesting 100 composition notebooks, 35 copies of “My Brother Sam is Dead” by James and Christopher Collier, 35 copies of “Shh! We're Writing the Constitution” by Jean Fritz, and 10 copies of “If You Were There When They Signed the Constitution” by Elizabeth Levy. I am truly looking forward to the upcoming school year.
