Do you remember the first book that you read that really opened your eyes to the world? For me, it was Manchild in the Promised Land, by Claude Brown. This book gave me so much insight into what it was like to grow up poor and Black in the 1940's and 50's, which was when my parents grew up. For about a decade I would go back and read that book every couple of years. Unfortunately, many of the students that I teach have never had a literary experience of such poignancy. However, it's not because they do not like to read. A great many of the 7th and 8th grade students that I teach love to read. They beg for reading time during the week. And though there are books in the classroom's library, my students complain that they cannot find any good books. The problem, for them, is that most of the books in school and classroom libraries do not adequately reflect their lives. The school's population is made up of primarily minority students, with 59.1% of African descent, 35.2% of Hispanic descent, 4.9% Asian or other, and only 0.8% White. At home, the students watch BET (Black Entertainment Televison), Univision and Telemundo(spanish stations), and Asian television shows on public access, but when they come to school and are invited to read any books that appeal to them, they are usually confronted with an array of books written by non-minority authors. Most of the minority written and related books in my current class library are either written about children who lived during slavery times or about professional entertainers and athletes. There is a whole array of minority fiction and non-fiction written for pre-adolescent and adolescent students that is being ignored. Fiction helps us relate to the world around us. It asks the greatest imaginative question there is "What if...?" Why should minority students only be allowed to examine the what ifs of a culture other than their own. Sharon G. Flake, Angela Johnson, Jacqueline Woodson, Julia Alvarez, Christina Garcia, Azar Nafisi, Ji-li Jiang and Zlata Filipovic are just a smattering of minority authors who are only marginally represented in classroom libraries where the majority of students are minorities. We live in a multi-cultural society, but many students are only being shown one face and it's not even their own.
