I teach first grade at a new school that opened this September in a high-poverty neighborhood. We are a Title I school that is replacing a failed school, and the majority of my students are reading well below grade level. Our budget was cut by tens of thousands of dollars shortly after the school opened, and basic supplies are quickly running short!

I have many non-readers in my class who are lagging well behind grade-level expectations. I need to quickly improve their reading skills if they have any hope of catching up and feeling successful in school. Many of them come from homes with few or no books, and they need to learn a love of literature to motivate them to improve their reading skills. Moreover, while I read aloud to them every day, they need more exposure to hearing how books should sound.

A listening center with books on CD will help my non-readers by allowing them to hear how a books should sound at the same time as they look at the words. It will also improve the English language skills of my foreign language speakers. For more successful readers who are able to figure out tough words but still read “choppily,” hearing the books read with fluency can be a model for how their reading should sound. In order to meet the needs of a range of learners, I frequently have students work at centers that will help them with skills that they need to improve. A listening center with 8 headphones will help all of my students with their different abilities to achieve a positive reading experience in first grade.
