My students, virtually %100 low-income, African-American children, deserve to see history being made as our first African-American president takes office. I am currently teaching 8th grade Reading & Language Arts at a Title I middle school. Virtually 100% of the students are low income and my school has been designated as one of the lowest performing in the district and has been part of various school reform efforts. I personally serve two special education sections and one general education section of students.

My students and their families have little or no access to the cultural institutions in Washington, DC that serve as the foundation for our country's historical consciousness. Unless they are taken on a school trip, they will never see the grand facade of the U.S. Capitol, the beautiful Rose Garden of the White House, the historical volumes of the Smithsonian, nor the awe-inspiring monuments sprinkled throughout our nation's capital city. Furthermore, they will likely never be able to see their new president - the first with whom they can identify directly - speak to his nation as they watch from the crowd. They were so inspired by the campaign and exuberant over his election! We wish to give them a chance to see him in person.

We simply need a day. We need a one-day field trip to Washington, DC. We will depart on coach buses from our school early in the morning, attend the inauguration ceremony and then tour some of the city's famous monuments and museums. Finally, we will cap off our trip with a campus tour of American University in order to get the students excited about the prospect of attending college. Finally, the students will be treated to dinner at the ESPN Zone in downtown Washington, DC followed by the bus ride home that evening. Our students will remember this day for the rest of their lives. It will inspire them to reach beyond the despair that many of them feel and live within their families and communities and pursue higher dreams. It will expose them to positive role models such as President Obama and other African-American elected officials and college students whom we will encounter. They will be more deeply invested in the American experience after participating in this trip.

Your generosity will provide my students with a remarkable opportunity to witness history. This trip is not just any class field trip to the zoo or the aquarium. This will be an adventure that will inspire our students to knock down the formidable obstacles that stand before them and hold themselves to a higher standard. They will be given a glimpse of the possible with this trip and hopefully connect themselves with the American dream that has escaped so many in their community.
