Increase Learning Through MP3s

My students need 10 SanDisk Sansa MP3 players.

This project expired on April 5, 2009.

One of our school’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) goals is to increase the use of technology in the classroom. This project will increase the use of technology by making MP3 players available for individual student and classroom use. As the library media teacher, I can help students and teachers learn how to use this technology.

We need MP3 players for two purposes: 1) Students can check out MP3s to access audio books in MP3 format using the public library’s Net Library. Studies show that non-English speakers and students of lower economic levels have less access to technology than other students, thus creating a “digital divide.” MP3s for check-out help to provide access for these students. Audio books motivate and appeal to reluctant readers, students learning English, and students with low reading skills. They increase comprehension, word recognition, and fluency. 2) Because MP3s have microphones, they can be used to record “podcasts.” Students can read out loud and then critique their oral reading. History classes can interview older people about their memories of the Depression, World War II, etc. Foreign language classes can record themselves speaking the language or can interview about foreign cultures. Science/math students can interview people about occupations to learn practical applications. Students in music, drama, art, and dance can interview about proper techniques. Teachers can record assignment instructions for absentees. MP3 files can be attached to a classroom blog or webpage.

Part of the CSIP is to increase the use of innovative technology for better student achievement. Providing training and having teachers and students use 21st century tools such as MP3 players involves collaboration between me (the library media teacher) and classroom teachers and students. Teacher training and helping teachers develop creative lesson plans that use the MP3 players will be part of implementation. Student training will also be given. To provide accountability, I will survey students and teachers at the beginning and end of the year to evaluate usage and effectiveness of the MP3s. I will then provide additional training and/or help to enhance the use of this technology.

Our students need 10 MP3 players. These MP3 players will be used with grades 7-9 in a variety of classes. Innovative technology use in our school will increase through your generosity. At the present time, many students view MP3 players as luxury items used for entertainment. This project will help them to see MP3s as tools that can be used for communication and problem-solving both in and outside the classroom. Sources: Clark, C., & Gorski, P. (2001).
