I am a reading specialist at a low income school district in Texas. I teach students that are having problems reading. These students are in third, fourth and fifth grades and need help with reading on a daily basis.

Students come to my class because they are not where they need to be when it comes to reading. They constantly express to me that they would read more if I had books that they could read that they don't feel like are "baby" books. I don't have many lower level books, but the ones that I do have do not interest them because they are for younger children. That just doesn't describe these kids.

I asked my students what types of books they would like and most of these students told me they would like nonfiction books that don't seem like they are "baby" books. I would love to have books by Lola Schaefer and Sharon Gordon that seem like they are higher level, but they are really lower leveled nonfiction books. I really believe that these books would help build my student's confidence in reading and help them to become a better reader.

Please help me get these kids to reading! They are great kids that deserve to have books that they like to read. I believe that there is nothing more powerful than a child with a book in their hands and you can help give these children that power!
