I am a sixth grade teacher in the Bronx. I teach over sixty students daily. My school is a school in need and over 85% of our children receive free lunch. This year I will be teaching ancient civilizations using a great textbook called "Journey Through Time." For each section there is a fantastic method for studying, note-taking and test-taking. The textbook uses a series of "foldables" to achieve mini-project presentations, mini-reports and notes ready for studying and test-taking. One of the greatest challenges in middle school is teaching our kids to create useful outlines and how to properly study from them. These foldables arrange notes and essays from class notes into attractive little packages. One foldable is in the shape of a pyramid; another has four quadrants which open in a "lift-me-to-see-the answer" fashion. The fabulous point to these foldable outlines is that they are easy to make- they're simply made from folding 2 or 3 or 4 pieces of paper. The students will keep them in their history folders and will we actively use these techniques throughout the year. All that is needed is a lot of manila paper, a bit of glue and scissors and some construction paper for more colorful miniature presentations.
