Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Have you ever been in a doctor's office looking for something to read only to find Fly Fishing Quarterly or Knitting for Dummies? Imagine the 6th grader in my classroom who has not yet learned to love reading. During free reading time, all of us - students and adults - need to have something enjoyable to read. My 6th graders are generationally impoverished. Their parents and grandparents grew up in the housing projects too. They need literature that's engaging, educational, and that helps them see the possibilities in life. Several publishers provide those magazines. For a small amount, we would like to order subscriptions to Time for Kids for my sixth grade students. TFK, in addition to be interesting for the students, helps make connections to social studies and world cultures. The magazines will help open their minds to reading and to the world outside of the housing projects.
