My students need 1 copy of a theatrical performance of "Macbeth", 1 copy of a CD recording of "Macbeth", 1 copy of a CD recording of Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart", and 1 copy of a comprehensive anthology of African American poetry.

My students are a charismatic, dynamic and dedicated group of 10th graders from the lowest income neighborhood in their city. I teach them 10th grade English and they try their hardest to master new skills daily. Our school is a large school that has been historically very unsuccessful on standardized tests and has a low graduation rate. However, since instituting a 10th grade academy last year, we have seen amazing growth in our school, community and students. My current students strive to be the new face of our school and they are well aware that increasing their reading levels and literacy skills will help them accomplish this goal.
Our school has no funds to purchase books for students, let alone audio recordings of such books. I have tried many times to place orders and multiple times have been shot down by administration because there is just no money and few vendors willing to take a chance on a school that has not had the funds to pay past bills.
I have a large number of student with special needs, very low reading levels and severe comprehension issues. However, this does not mean that we can not read 10th grade level literature. It does mean that we need the support of audio recordings and visual recordings. Audio recordings will allow my students to follow along as they are read to in a dynamic, theatrical manner. Studies show that ones reading level correlates with being read aloud to. As much as I read aloud to my students, they are just plain sick of my voice. These new, dramatic readings will help with comprehension and engagement. The visual recordings with help put a picture to words that may not exist in a low level readers mind.
By supporting this project, you are supporting reading growth. The average reading level in my classes is 5th grade. This means that without the support of audio and visual elements, reading texts on level would be out of the question. Please help us increase our reading skills and enjoy reading!
