I work with special needs students in a self-contained classroom. Much of our reading and writing experience revolves around experiential learning, so that students can make the connection between what they've read and life experience. As a result, we do a great deal of journaling and create picture books. Having a digital camera would enable us to take pictures of classroom experiences (e.g., planting flowers, measuring items in the classroom, reading with our reading buddies, celebrating birthdays, etc.), and tying these events to classroom stories. At the end of the year, I would like students to leave the classroom with a "personal learning experience" journal with pictures that would have captured them in academic and social activities throughout the year. These children love to create and share what they've learned. What better way is there for them to walk away at the end of the years than their own book of learning that they themselves created?
