I teach a class of 20 first graders in all content areas. My class represents a very diverse group, both in terms of culture and academic ability. This year, I have students from Iraq, Italy, Japan, and Germany...as well as from all over the United States.

One thing my students share is the love of reading. I have found a great way to tap into this while having fun is by incorporating 'reader's theater'. This is the sixth year that I have chosen to incorporate reader's theater as a strategy for practicing reading fluency and expression with my students. Each year, we pick parts, learn our scripts, even design costumes and sets! The students have a great time, but one thing that never fails is the inevitable 'stage fright' when we perform our play for parents and friends.

I have come up with a solution for preventing this occurrence and it involves turning our reader's theater performance into a real-life, student led MOVIE! I have now begun using our school's video camera to tape the reader's theater, then we show the videotape as a movie on our big screen using our school's LCD projector. One problem I have run into, however, is editing our videotape to include PowerPoint slides introducing each play and its' actors. It is also rather difficult to hook up the LCD projector without fully disassembling our classroom computer from the area where it sits. Having a laptop computer that is portable and can allow the students to take turns using a movie making software program would truly enable them to take complete ownership of this learning project.

Your generous donation will make it possible for me to continue this 'tradition' more easily with my students...freeing up some time for us to add another play each season! My students need one portable laptop for use in making our yearly readers' theater movie.
