Winston Salem, NC Grades 6-8

I currently teach 8th grade social studies and want my students to be able to "view" the world through an interactive lens. Unfortunately, I am in a very large middle school (1200 students and a staff of 90) and we are operating with very little technology. For example, one projector for 13 teachers and one partially functioning computer lab. Yes, we are built in an affluent neighborhood but take a look inside our building and you will find we are not technologically growing in this 21st century world. How can our students be taught the skills needed to be globally competitive citizens with the lack of technology funding?

In a typical classroom students are seen sitting at their desks, reading from textbooks, and responding to oral or written questions. Where is the engagement? Student body language and facial expressions imply boredom or lack of connection to the material. Through the use of “interactive” materials student’s attention levels will rise as well as student engagement which will lead to higher achievement levels. My students are currently very interested in the election process, but cannot track the results due to lack of technology needs. I teach on the Exceptional Children team at my school and those students need to be actively engaged instead of using the "traditional" teaching methods. They need to be able to "see" things visually, example PowerPoints and/or virtual field trips, and to create products to show their achievement and interest in the topic. Every student should be able to learn to meet their needs and without the technology in the classroom that is hard to do.

Research demonstrates that integrating technology into the curriculum can raise student achievement and increase motivation to learn. In order to prepare the 21st century learner, you have to have an enriched facility with modern equipment. My vision is for my classroom to be an interactive environment with multiple projects going on at the same time. My philosophy is “an active classroom is a happy classroom”. In order to make a dent in my vision I would like to start with an LCD projector that stays permanently in my room. My students have a huge interest in visual learning and would love to create multi-media presentations for the class such as PowerPoints, movie-making DVDs, blogging, and podcasts. As a teacher, I would love for my students to be able to watch videos on a screen, to take notes from PowerPoint presentations, to see interactive graphs,to manipulate and analyze data, and to be able to use the school's Classroom Performance System for online quizzes or review games. All of these learning tools could happen with one this one piece of technology- the LCD projector.

In order to constructively teach in the new world of technology learning has to be a hands-on, independent approach. Students must also be guided by a learning environment that supports analysis and real world thinking skills. The days are over when the teacher lectures and the students take notes and answer questions. Student learning needs to be an active learning environment with students as the decision makers, not the teacher. The only way this will happen for my 110 students is through your help and generous donation. Yes, my school does have money, but it does not give any funding towards technology. My students are very lovable and intelligent children who want to have skills to be ready for the 21st century job market. The LCD projector would help my students to grow in their skills such as: collaboration and sharing.
