I am a speech pathologist and work with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and multiple-handicaps ages 2.5-12.

Our parents are really struggling with their children once they are home. Some parents do not know how to help their child carry over the skills they have learned throughout the school day, while others are overwhelmed by everyday routines and interactions with their child.

My colleague & I have provided many parent workshops and have sent the parents home with new-found knowledge as well as individualized materials for their children. While the parents appreciated this, we believe they need even more help. We would like to implement a Parent Resource Room in our school. The Parent Resource Room would be a place where parents can come and get the support they need to have successful experiences with their children. Parents will have access to free visual supports, learn how to make much needed materials for their children, learn the skills they need to interact with their child, as well as have access to a lending library. To increase the capabilities of our Parent Resource Room we would need a network laser printer, as well as printer paper, so we could create visual supports for the children and be able to print out other various materials for the parents to use with their children at home.

While this project seems to serve the parents, everything we do is for our students. Any information/materials we can provide our parents with has a direct impact on their children. Your donations will make our dream a reality. Please help us so that our parents with special needs children will have a place where they can find the answers they so desperately seek.
