Ms. F. Mary Munford Elementary School
Richmond, VA Grades PreK-2

My city public school 2nd graders have never felt like this before. That is, they are becoming more aware of world issues and want to do something to make the world a better place. I would like to foster that spirit, as well as their creativity, to raise awareness about issues close to their hearts. Our class is going to tap into our feelings with felt.

One of the goals of my science and social studies program is to connect what we learn with real issues. I want to give students an authentic experience. When we focus on maps skills, we use a CDC map to see which areas need donations of malaria bed nets. When we learn about habitats, we research which animals are endangered in those areas. When we discuss weather patterns, we come up with some ways to reduce our carbon footprint on the earth. I want my students to feel empowered to make a difference any way they can.

One way students can impact others is by raising awareness about an issue they care about. As I teach all my students, the first way to reach out is by educating others. I would like students to create felt animals/shapes/items to symbolize something they would like to educate others about. Using the books and included patterns, students will be inspired to create a felt "softie" that is not just cute, but will be a springboard of discussion on the playground, in the cafeteria, at home, etc. Students will also learn basic sewing techniques such as threading a needle and stitching fabric. Students that wish to recycle can use socks or unpaired gloves to create their softie. Softies will be carried around during an "Awareness Week" where students may share their craft with others at school and home. Students will be encouraged to talk about the issue in addition to showing off their creation. For example, a student that crafts a felted tree to represent deforestation would teach others about replanting. As research suggests, hands-on learning is one of the best ways to make information accessible to young learners. I anticipate our sewing project with a cause will tap into that.

You support will make it possible for my students to create a felted softie to carry around with pride and accomplishment. These softies will represent an issue that students care about and want to raise awareness about. Your help will give students a meaningful and fun opportunity to educate others and themselves.
