Hey! Did Anyone See My Desk?

My students need 12 open front school desks.

This project expired on March 6, 2009.

I teach lovely, hard working, 4th graders that have earned the enjoyment of a new desk. What hurts me? The students who have graduated from our school to go to middle school, knowing we had said "We were buying them new desks", and we did not. Why did we not? We have changed principals three times. Only some classrooms were funded for desks and then the money ran out.

Children have to endure transitions too many times in our world today. They are moved from school to school and expected to adjust. We often overlook how it affects the child emotionally. They experience their parents being evicted from their apartments, and the child is literally dropped off at the next school. It is not the child's fault that their parents got into a jam! Why take it out on the child? We even pink slip wonder teachers that have really made a difference in a child's life, but we overlook that too. Do we realize how much it hurts a child to lose a teacher that they care about? It hurts me and I'm an adult! My question to you would be, "Why not buy them a new desk? Why should they have to have broken, old, falling apart desks?" I have always felt that children should be taken care of, but taught to do the same when they grow up. I teach my students this everyday. Helping others for the good, will make a wonderful difference when they grow up. Their children will grow up and do the same. The cycle of hope and caring will begin. If our big, beautiful, churches can have new rows of velvet padded seats, new furniture throughout the building, why not sturdy desks!

I am humbly asking for 12 new desks that have a flat top. I don't know if the person or company that built or designed children's desks, realized the problems they would have, keeping their books and papers from sliding off, with every move they make. It's bad enough that the books are half the size of some of the kids, but desks with a slanted top is very distracting. That is one of the main reasons I keep carpet in the classroom. When they keep dropping books and paper, they work better sitting on the carpet. I only let a few at a time. The benefit would be less distractions and more focus on their subjects. Does that sound selfish? I hope not. My students really need new desks. I personally feel that as grown-ups, we could give them that service, so they could benefit from a worth while investment!

I often reflect on when I was a child in school. I was one of the lucky ones to be blessed with caring parents. They made sure we had the proper desks and materials through the schools PTA and fund raisers. We do not have that kind of support at a low-income school. Our fund raisers break even and PTO is hard enough just to get the parents to pay dues. The meetings.....well let's just say we have a few who will make it come rain or shine! I hope that you will remember what it was like being a child. I know that when I do I feel inspired to write these grants, attend workshops, and encourage a child to learn about the world and what he/she can do for it, not what it can do for them. President Kennedy stated this in his speech except using the country. So I ask of you, "What can you do for my students? In return, one day they will be able to do for you!"
