Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When you were a child, did you ever wonder if the exhibits in the museum came alive once it was closed? 'Dozin with the Dinos' is an overnight experience at the Field Museum where for one night the students find out the answer to that question. The lights dim and students and parents armed with flashlights explore the Ancient Egyptian culture, the African savannah with the Royal Palace in Bamun, and several Inuit villages. The evening also includes a workshop about the exhibits, a live performance, late night activities culminating with the exciting exploration of those exhibits by flashlight. It is an experience where students would reinforce learned material about the Inuit while setting the stage for world history in the coming school year. I am a 5th grade teacher who works with low-income students, with many of their parents coming from small villages throughout Mexico. In exploring my students' roots within the classroom, I was surprised to learn that many of my students had not been outside their own neighborhood of a few blocks. This means they are missing out on the rich cultural and educational offerings Chicago has to offer - many only miles away. One experience I would like to give both my students and one of their parents is an opportunity to participate in an educational experience that will lay the groundwork for families to pick up where the school leaves off for educational and cultural involvement. This opportunity includes the ability for them to bring one parent. I have a class of 28 well-deserving students. How wonderful it would be to offer this once-in-a-lifetime experience to my students and their families! Thank you for your kind consideration.
