If you could only imagine how excited I am about Eyewitness books you would understand how excited my students are when they get a chance to read them! I teach science. No. Erase that. I eat, breathe, sleep science! I love science so much, I couldn't have asked for any thing better then becoming a science teacher! I am the enrichment teacher for grades 3, 4, and 5 in New York City's rough and tough neighborhood, South Bronx. When I started the school was a runaway train on a wrong way track BUT with the team work and dedication of all the teachers and staff... we turned the frown that was our school upside down and became an A school in the district! We are awesome. However... we can not stay at the top without some help.

I run a tight ship. There is no wasted time in my class. There is so much great stuff to learn about this wondrous world of ours, I can not spare a second to veer off track and loose insight of my lesson. However, if there is five minutes at the end of the period and everyone has finished their work, I allow for some silent reading from my science library that has acquired years to build. BOOKS ARE EXPENSIVE!!! It also doesn't help that the city cut SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS from Teacher's Choice 2008 budget (the only money we are allotted for our classroom on a yearly basis) so the allocated money that I would use to buy more books has decreased from $250 to $150. I love book shopping but money is tight. With the economy as it is and a teacher's pay as it is unfortunately something has got to give. Now who suffers the most? The students do.

I'm a girl who knows what she likes. I enjoy the finer things in life. So obviously the books that I am gaga crazy over are of course, the most expensive science reference books out on the market. I loved Eyewitness books as child and as a teenager. Now as an adult I STILL absolutely love them! The topics are so amazing, the descriptions are detailed but easy to read, the historical artifacts relating to the topic are all bound together in one visually pleasing package! When I purchase a new Eyewitness book I introduce it to my students with oomph and pizzazz which makes them so eager to read it! Fights break out! Children cry! They all want to look at the books especially for the pictures... but sadly there is not enough in my library. So I am asking for more eyewitness books plus the (I know it's pricey) accompanying video library so I can share my love of these books with all the students that I teach. I only have about 12 or so of these books. Yet, I teach over 200 students weekly. Each year the books are becoming more worn out. I would be the happiest person in the entire world if I could have all 119 books in my library... but for now... a couple more will do.

My students do not have perfect lives. They come from broken homes, removed from their own homes, some even live in extreme poverty or even worse, a homeless shelter. I can't adopt them and buy them race car beds and designer clothes. However, I can intrigue them with knowledge and insight to want to explore and question why we are here and how this planet works. Some of my students have never left their neighborhood or the borough for that matter. So imagine the wonder that a child from the South Bronx experiences when flipping through a beautifully photographed book of the Rain Forrest or the Desert. I try so hard to create a fun environment for them and with my attitude and my love of science I wish that all my students can become great explorers or researchers. As a donor, you help me achieve my goal. You contribute more then a few hundred dollars to a classroom teacher. You bring the world to them.
