I teach Language Arts to eighth grade students in a rural community. Most students in this school receive free or reduced lunch. I would like to approach writing in a new way. Typically, I give feedback on student papers by writing the corrections or praises directly on the papers. Most of the time, students don't look at what I write. So, I would like to appeal to the students' auditory perception by recording my "notes" to them on audio tapes. I would return the tapes with their written work. At that point, the students could listen to my comments, correct errors, and return the paper and the tape to me. The tape would provide them with a continuous record of improvements they need to remember to make in their writing, along with verbal praise on positive practices they are using in their writing. Using the headphones would give the students something new to motivate them and, hopefully in the process, increase their level of writing and interest in writing. In order to complete this activity, I would need a classroom set of audio cassette players and headphones. I would also need a reliable tape recorder. In addition, I would need to have blank tapes on which to record information for each individual student. Batteries for each player would be necessary as well. I believe this new method of providing feedback to students will be much more effective for the students. In this world of technology, I need to be able to roll with the punches. This is an exciting new way of helping my students improve their writing.
