Mr. S. West Sylvan Middle School
Portland, OR Grades 6-8

My school has some great kids who are excited about their band program. I have 3 band classes ranging from grades 6-8, and they're eager to play as best as they can.

I'm lucky to have a great job as a first-year teacher in a nice community with awesome kids. However, while the parents, community, and administration are very supportive, there are some things that I don't have that I need to do my job effectively. One of those things is called a strobe tuner.

A strobe tuner is a precision device that allows students to see how well they are playing in tune. While there are other tuners out there on the market, they don't offer as much information as a strobe tuner does. In music, a note that's in-tune in one passage may be out-of-tune in another passage, even if it's the exact same frequency: the strobe tuner makes students think critically about what they are playing and how they fit into any given chord. In music, notes need to be constantly adjusted depending on what part of the chord they are in. Strobe tuners help to show kids how to play in tune regardless of key; they give immediate, instantaneous feedback as to how in-tune they would be if the whole (in tune!) band were playing with them.

Your generous gift will make it so that students can have the tools to take their musicianship to the next level. Once students really learn how to play in tune, they won't need a strobe tuner, because they can hear it for themselves, and that's a very empowering feeling! Then, when new kids enter the school, we can continue educating them about proper intonation, and the cycle continues! In the end, your gift will be able to help students explore their artistic side without the hindrance of worrying about playing in-tune--they'll already be doing it!
