I am a Spanish teacher in a high poverty rural school in upstate New York. I emphasize culture and traditions in my classroom along with learning the Spanish language. It is so important for me to give 100% effort in regards to culture as many of my students may never be exposed to other cultures. Our area is very remote and most of my students do not have contact with people of other races and cultures. Most of my students do not have a computer at home due to lack of financial resources. In order to bring people of other traditions alive in my classroom I need an LCD projector. With this projector, I can pull many sources of culture off of the internet and project them onto a large screen in my room. As of now, I have my students crowd around one computer monitor to view a video clip of something interesting and exciting relating to their language study. For example, we just watched "the running of the bulls" in Pamplona, Spain and learned about a fast paced ball game called "jai alai". The students have shown great enthusiasm for the video clips that I have shown them. I can talk to them about tradition, customs, and lifestyles all day and not reach them as a well done video can. I can only imagine how GREAT it would be if we could all see the videos clearly from our own seats on a big screen! It is IMPERATIVE that a classroom be fun and interesting to students. This has been my motivation since the day that I stepped into the classroom. If I can engage these students in different cultures, I can better engage them in learning the language. There are also some great sites to assist me in teaching a difficult grammar point.Sometimes just a different approach can make all of the difference. The nice thing about the LCD projector is that I can use it over and over for many years to come. I also would open up my classroom to any other class that would benefiet from it (during my free period or by switching classrooms for the period). THANK YOU so much for taking the time to read about this need. Regardless of wheter or not you choose my project, you are special for caring abut education in our country.
