Ya'at'eeh from the Brainiacs! The third graders in my classroom, also known as the Brainiacs, are working extremely hard this year to get smart. I teach third grade in northwest New Mexico. This is my second year "walking in beauty" with the Dine. My school services primarily Navajo students in a low-income community. My school is surrounded my cacti, mesas and sagebrush. This beautiful, but isolated school, lacks the resources of high-performing schools.

Many of my students have not left the Navajo reservation. Some of them might not ever venture very far. For some of my students, school has already been a place where they've failed and where they have been told they will continue to fail. I am motivated to go to school each day because my students have shown me that they can prove everyone who tells them they will fail wrong. School is a place where my students can be happy and where they can also succeed. I have seen every Brainiac in my classroom work hard to achieve their goals. Failure is no longer an option.

In my classroom, I use a projector not just to improve their writing, understand a new math concept or discuss a passage in a book, but to show them a little bit of the world. We watch videos of foreign places, look at interactive maps, see exotic animals and habitats, and see our own hard work projected for the whole class. However, my district will no longer let me check out an InFocus projector to do all this.

I don't want my students to miss out on the opportunity they have had to see at least a little bit of the world. With your help, we can continue projecting ourselves into a successful future.
