"When you discover your gift, you uncover you passion." This was said by Brian Souza author of Become Who You Were Born to Be. I am currently the Band/Strings teacher at a middle school in a low socioeconomic status area where I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Our school focuses on providing enriching and challenging learning experiences for our students, who outside of school may not otherwise have such opportunity.

Ponder this…visualize yourself surrounded by hundreds of parents, teachers, and administrators sitting in a gymnasium. With your hands raised and baton in hand, you’re prepared to introduce your band students who have worked so hard to prepare the best concert they’ve ever had. You look at your students with that eye of approval, awaiting that eye contact saying we’re ready to do this, let’s go. You give that prepatory beat, take a deep breath, and that first down beat sounds...like...a baby...dropped from the top of a skyscraper, screaming before it hits the roof of a car and the alarm sounds. Then you wake up (open your eyes) to your best band students asking questions like, “Why can’t I seem to stay in rhythm?” or “How do we make sure our phrases end together?” These questions seem, to a music teacher, easy to answer. However, it is evident that middle school students today often learn through a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities. For this reason, I find it pertinent to include activities that combine all three learning styles.

Music education has evolved from mere paper and pencil writing notes on a staff to technology, such as Smart Music software that is designed to improve student performance through an interactive environment that makes learning standard music repertoire exciting and fun. Through this software, students can visually follow the directing cursor as it walks its way through staff music projected on the screen. This software also performs (auditory) with the student and highlights problem areas for accuracy. Students are allowed to perform standard music assignments with the assistance of auditory and visually stimulating software, making practice a joy not a job. To utilize this software, however, there are some basic items that are needed to prepare these students for what’s to come; theory assistant information, CDs/DVDs of various instruments to help improve understanding of intonation, incentives to build student motivation, and assistive technology equipment to allow ease in monitoring student progress.

At our school we are taking music to another level, discovering gifts and uncovering passion. As a music educator at my school, I am indebted to fulfilling our schools mission, with the partnership of home and community, in providing opportunities for the success of all students by offering enriching and challenging learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Your help will make sure that our students are afforded this opportunity while tuning the world, one note at a time.
