The Nat Turner rebellion is mentioned in high school textbooks. It's glossed over as significant, but not worth spending more than a day on. The rebellion presents a fascinating look at power; who gets it and who exploits it. The seniors of my high school are a diverse population, representing a variety of ethnic groups, and including a variety of countries such as Ethiopia, Mongolia, and El Salvador. This project services two English Twelve classes made up of students who struggle academically. Most seniors are getting ready to go to college, enter the workforce, or serve their country. It is a time of finding their place in this world and realizing the power that each person has. It is a time for critical thinking and analysis of culture, industry, and our role as citizens. It is my hope that with this book, students see how much power they as individuals possess. This book provides students with a graphic novel that presents the story of the Nat Turner rebellion and provides for important conversations about power, struggle, race, ethnicity, and killing. We will read this in conjunction with "Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass." Both of these books are important to students' understanding about the historically oppressed and will provide students with inspiration to work towards making their lives meaningful for others. Your help will make it possible for students to understand our recent history of exploitation and make connections between past events and current forms of exploitation. The graphic novel provides for meaningful debate about exploitation, power, and whether killing is ever justified. It will inspire students to work towards a more just and equal world. My project needs 27 copies of "Nat Turner." It will help students to realize that freedom for all came at a cost to many brave people.
