This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade at a Title 1 school in California. Many of my students have limited financial resources and many are English Language Learners. I have been attempting to integrate more technology and visual aides to hook my ELLs and capitalize on the fact that most of my students are video gamers.

We have a fantastic new math curriculum that has all of the materials online. Not only is their textbook online, but they also have online animated tutorials, math manipulatives, and games (and a lot more!). Unfortunately most of my students don't have Internet access at home, so their only access to the online components is at school. Our school has made the investment in digital projectors, but is not able to afford to provide teachers with any type of remote. To use the online components I must sit in the back of the room to operate the computer. This is not ideal as I have to focus on the computer and not my students (not a good idea with 34 fifth graders in the dark!) and then try to shout the material and questions to my students from the back of the room.

This problem can be solved by a wireless tablet. The tablet will allow me to access and present our new math curriculum from anywhere in the classroom. Not only that, but it would allow my students and I to "write" on the webpage. We could answer math problems with out having to pull up the screen to get to the whiteboard and then squint through the glare. The students can actually use the games and manipulatives from the tablet rather than watching me or making their way through our crowded classroom to the computer in the back of the room.

Your help will ensure that all of my students have access to our math curriculum. It will make it easier, more enjoyable, and more productive for all of us to use.
