I am a new kindergarten teacher at Harney Elementary in the Vancouver Public Schools District in Vancouver, Washington. I am trying to create a learning palace for my Kindergartens that will be being school with me next week. I began the 2008-2009 school year as a 5th grade teacher at Harney Elementary. This is also my first year of teaching.

As a new school teacher there are many learning opportunities and just so happen was approached with one of the greatest ones of all. Switching grades after school has already started. Low enrollment made it necessary for one person in the 5th grade to give up their kids and start over in Kindergarten which was overloaded. It was a difficult decision but it made most sense for me to be the one to volunteer to go. My 5th grade students were disappointed but took the news well. I have had a great amount of support from my principal and colleagues and they have done all they can to help me. They have donated there time on this weekend in helping me set up my new classroom as well as gift cards to help me get started with materials and classroom decorations. However, there are a few things I feel that my new kindergartens could really benefit from that I do not have which is a magic carpet and some big books to help them get started with their journey to literacy.

These students are being pulled from two other kindergarten classes that were overloaded to create a new class and I really want them to feel at home in my classroom. Having a magic carpet is a great way for them to learn spacial awareness and it will serve as a great place for them to listen to stories and learn about calendar using the Every Day Counts program. In addition to the carpet I am requesting some big books that will support their learning in phonemic awareness as well as visual learning styles.

Your help will ensure that my students feel welcome in their new kindergarten classroom and that they have a magic carpet that they know is a place for learning and reading.
